Caspian Gull Larus cachinnansAdult, Belvide Reservoir, Staffs, November 2003 |

© S. Nuttall
Same individual as the standing adult, photographed at Belvide in November 2003. This photo is included to illustrate the pattern of the primaries on the spread wing. Note how the pale grey at the base of the primaries cuts into the black at the outer wing. Also, the grey tongue on the inner web of the outermost primary (P10) reaches the vein and leaves only a narrow black streak at the base of the outer web. Primary 5 has a narrow black bar but across both webs of the feather - this may be matched by argenteus Herring Gulls, but in nominate argentatus black on p5 is often confined to the outer web.
On the underwing, it is just possible to see how the extent of black is restricted to a relatively narrow band across the wing-tip.
