Herring Gull Larus argentatusFirst-winter, Warwickshire, December 2007 |

© A. R. Dean
Note fresh scapulars, with subterminal dark areas creating barred upperparts; neatly chequered greater coverts; all dark bill. Paler and more finely marked than similarly aged Lesser Black-backed Gull, and with shorter primary projection. The centres to the inner tertials are more solidly dark than many Herring Gulls but note the notching and more variegated pattern of the outer tertials. See also 1W Herring Gull flight pattern.
